While my better half was busy preparing tonight’s tea, I decided to pass the time with one of the smaller sets in my collection. My choice for the evening? The LEGO Creator Roller Skate—a delightful 3-in-1 set that also includes options to build a Boom Box or a Skateboard. For this session, I focused on constructing the Roller Skate.
The set came packaged in two of LEGO’s newer, eco-friendly paper bags—a welcome step toward sustainability. To my delight, there were no stickers to contend with, which is always a plus in my book. As I began assembling the base of the Roller Skate, I was struck by its compact size. It was smaller than I had anticipated, but at around £30, it’s a fair trade-off for what is ultimately a fun and budget-friendly build.
The construction process starts with the sole and the sides of the trainer, and the final steps involve adding the trucks and laces. Since this set primarily uses traditional LEGO bricks rather than Technic pieces, it’s an easy and straightforward build, making it accessible to younger or less experienced builders.
The second bag included the pieces needed to complete the trucks, laces, and the decorative elements on the heel. The laces, crafted from rods and tubes, connect to two Technic-style brackets at the top of the skate. While the first bag was a breeze and enjoyable to build, I did have a few criticisms of the second. The laces, though cleverly designed, were quite flimsy and not securely attached to the skate. A slight knock would dislodge them, and I found myself crawling around on the floor to retrieve and reattach them more than once.
The trucks were another area where the design fell a bit short. The main support beam was only two bricks wide, which made it difficult to keep securely attached to the shoe. The combination of a small surface area and the weight of the truck assembly and wheels resulted in some instability. A wider connection point, even if hidden behind the wheels, could have provided better support without compromising the aesthetic of the build.
As for the heel decoration, it was quite fiddly to assemble and might be better suited to a younger builder with smaller hands. That said, I appreciated the inclusion of alternative decoration patterns—though I opted for the one featured in the review images, there’s also a vibrant rainbow-esque design for those who prefer something different.
Despite these minor drawbacks, I thoroughly enjoyed the process of building the LEGO Creator Roller Skate. The finished product is charming and makes for a great display piece in my collection. In fact, I like it so much that I’m hesitant to dismantle it to try out the other builds. I might even purchase another copy of the set just to assemble the Boom Box!
In my opinion, the LEGO Creator Roller Skate is best suited to younger builders due to its simplicity, though older fans of LEGO will still find it enjoyable, especially as a quick and relaxing build. For its price, it offers great value and a fun way to spend an evening.
